Turns out he knows this guy! "That's Bob Hoover, a WW2 P-38 pilot and later test pilot. I met him at an airshow some years back and spent 30 minutes talking to him about the control inputs he used to get the constant G effect in that manoevre - you are flying an 'egg shaped' barrel roll rather than symmetric one.
